Once you start looking in to things like this, it’s as though there is no way out. What has been seen can not be unseen!
There are pages and pages of scientific studies that prove that what we eat, sleep and breathe is quite literally killing us.
The World Health Organisation quote this very scary statistic about endocrine disrupting chemicals “In the WHO European Region a recent analysis estimated the costs of the burden of disease attributable to endocrine-disrupting chemicals at €163 billion per year.”.
Ok so whats endocrine and why do I care? Well, we’ve all got an endocrine system, that is busy at work 24/7 balancing hormones that regulate pretty much every aspect of our life, from sleep to metabolism to growth. So that is something you’re going to want to protect yep?
Me to! So, say you eat healthy, exercise, drink moderate amounts and do all the “right” things, your endocrine system will be working tickety boo, right? Hmmm, ish! The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences says this “Endocrine disruptors may be found in many everyday products– including plastic bottles, metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides.” That’s scary, but we’re safe because all our products are regulated so chemicals are distributed in safe amounts in our products….?
That might be the case that products are regulated well, but that is per product. Nobody cones to us and says in the same way they do with salt and fats and calories “RDA plasticiser 3mg”. We go about our day, using cosmetics, eating food from packages, drinking drinks from bottles, using perfumes, cleaning products and more, without giving a second thought that those luxuries contain a variety of chemicals in varying amounts that we ingest. Our bodies take in many chemicals through all those different things, but nobody tells us what a safe amount is of them.
We can ingest the chemicals, by eating, breathing, absorbed through our skin, what we drink or from where we go literally all day every day we are exposed.
Some side effects of a build up of toxins include headaches and fatigue, how often do you or the people in your life complain of these two symptoms, often I bet. That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to side effects of toxins, other illnesses include confusion, nausea, breathing issues, hormonal problems and the big C to name a few.
Yup, cancer. There is a whole host of carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), we come in to contact with on a daily basis, for example parabens and phalates, Just those two alone are in a huge amount of cosmetics, so say you apply, moisturiser, primer, foundation, setting spray, you haven’t even left the house yet and you’re covered in carcinogens. That’s before you’ve inhaled the formaldehyde* from the air freshener you love, or drank traces of BPA* from your bottled water.
This is not a comprehensive list or article on the dangers of ingesting toxins or where to find them, the list of toxins is humungous as is the science behind the dangers. I hope this brief explanation will encourage you to doing your own research to discover what you’re putting in your body and how to make better lifestyle choices to compliment your health. I’ll be back soon with a post on how to support reducing toxicity in your life easily.
